Quote of the Day
- Caroline Fraker, Vice President of Compliance, MedBen
We held a Lunch & Learn today on the Health care Reform Bill and our presenter, Caroline Fraker, did an excellent job trying to explain a complicated subject.
One item she covered was what employers can and can't do in order to have a grandfathered plan, which I thought was very interesting, considering many of the new regulations seem to contradict each other, thus the quote of the day (which she said at least four times during the hour-long session).
Nice job Caroline.

Saying No . . .

Did You Know. . .
- Licking County is an economic powerhouse. Licking County hosts Central Ohio's largest manufacturing corridor with 11 million s.f. of buildings, 1,000+ acres, rail/inter modal, manufacturing-oriented, capacity for growth, and four of Central Ohio's 25 largest industrial parks.
- Licking County is a haven for the advanced materials industry in Ohio. In an area defined by I-70, SR 16, SR37 and SR79 is a diverse presence of the advanced materials industry with polymers, steel, aluminum, micro electronics, wood, ag/bio, organics, food, foam, silicon and other advanced processes.
- Licking County is where many global products are born. Product development for next generation manufactured goods is found in abundance here. Owens Corning, Momentive Performance Materials, Bayer MaterialScience, Holophane, Boeing, Goodrich and Screen Machine are among the companies that are engineering and producing next generation products in facilities found in Licking County.
- Many unique-to-the-world capabilities are found in Licking County's backyard. Kaiser aluminum's plant in Heath has the only hot roll aluminum process in the world. Boeing's AWACS-ESM anechoic chamber is one-of-a-kind. NATO tried to duplicate it once and couldn't. Samuel Manu-Tech has North America's only heat treat line that uses bizmuth to anneal steel instead of lead.
- Licking County has defied the axiom that people won't relocate from the sun belt to the so-called rust belt. Boeing moved a workload from Dallas, TX. They have also attracted key leadership from California and Georgia.
For those who live and work here, this should make you stand taller. For those who don't - why don't you?
Thanks Rick.

Quote of the Day
"Community Leadership was highly beneficial for Sandy therefore CardWare. CL made her more comfortable in dealing with individuals outside our organization plus she gained personal as well as professional confidence along with an understanding of where and how she could make a difference in the community. As a Perry County resident, out loud to me one day she wondered how Community Leadership could be replicated there".

Need To Improve Your Leadership Skills?
Beginning with the 2010-2011 class (starting in September of 2010), the Chamber will be running this program on our own, which I am very excited about. Over the past years, we have partnered with several great organizations who operated the program, but when an opportunity opened up for us to put our fingerprints back on the program, we jumped at the chance.
We have made several changes to the curriculum, but still kept the programs that meant the most to the ones who have taken the class in the past. The 2010 - 2011 class will experience these new initiatives:
- Each participant will take the Myers-Briggs Test and will learn and understand how their personalities work for and against them
- This class will be taught the Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership, based off the book The Leadership Challenge by Kouzes and Posner
- There will be three sessions taken from the Graduate Program at Muskingum College: Change (based on principals outlined in the book Switch); Critical Thinking and Decision Making/Problem Solving
- Making presentations/public speaking in front of their peers
- Taking an active role in organizing the programs each month
- Observing non-profit Boards in action
In addition to the above items, the class will also expand their network of contacts in and around Licking County as well as learn about different aspects of the community (education, economic development, health care, etc.). Community Leadership of Licking County is good for all people, no matter the age or occupation.
This class will be held on the third Friday of each month beginning on September 17 and will run through May 20. Cost is $600 for the entire year and includes lunch and all materials.
We are now accepting applications for the 2010 - 2011 class. For more information, please call me at 740.345.9757 ext. 5. The deadline to apply is August 1, 2010. Class size is limited, so reserve your spot today!

Camp Enterprise Set To Begin
An annual Newark Rotary event for more than 35 years, Camp Enterprise offers a unique opportunity for a select group of students nominated by their home schools to learn about best business practices, the free enterprise system, and practice what they learn by competing as “companies” throughout the three-day event.
From strategic planning to developing a loan request to working with local government, students at Camp Enterprise will get the chance to interact with local experts, government, and business representatives – many of them Rotary members. Each “company” will have a hands-on opportunity to learn about effective marketing strategies. The Newark Rotary Club will award up to four scholarships worth $500 to 1,000 each to participating students.
Camp Enterprise begins at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, June 8. It will be held at Saints Peter and Paul Retreat Center, the former PIME, located off Thornwood Drive in Newark. The event will conclude on Thursday, June 11 with a dinner and awards ceremony for the students, their parents, Rotary Members and guests.
